From Here to Eternity continues her interrogation of death practices by looking not only to organizations and people trying to revolutionize or reinvent the American death industry but also to traditions in Japan, Mexico, Bolivia, Indonesia, and beyond. We shove it away into hospitals and funeral homes, leave the work of caring for our dead to others so we can pretend we aren’t going to die one day as well. One of the points Doughty brings up throughout her books is that a lot of us, Americans in particular, do not know how to face death. I’ve always been a little apprehensive about embracing my curiosity about death, worried it would somehow scare people or be seen as weird, so Doughty’s books really struck a chord with me. I’ve been a fan of Caitlin Doughty since I read Smoke Gets In Your Eyes and Other Lessons from the Crematory earlier this year.
